The first test win for the Springboks since readmission! All in all, the 1992 Springbok tour to France and the UK was not a successful one. Having come off the back of two straight losses against the All Blacks and Australia, the Boks went on this tour as underdogs. Throw is rife provincialism within the squad and it was easy to see the Boks weren’t expected to deliver.
John Williams brought in 7 new players from the team that lost against the Wallabies in Cape Town and controversially selected Willie Hills at hooker. The changes paid off and although Sebastien Viars had an off day with the boot, the Boks played some really good rugby and did enough to beat the French by 20 – 15.
